Prentus

Prentus is a SaaS job search platform that combines gamified tools and a community of supporters to help people break into tech.

Problem

Many job seekers face barriers when searching for employment, including limited access to job opportunities and long and tedious application processes. These issues can result in a lengthy and frustrating job search experience, leading to reduced motivation and increased stress.

Solution

Therefore, a solution is needed to make the job search fair, fast, and fun for job seekers, improving their chances of finding suitable employment and promoting a more efficient job market.

1. Discovery

1.1 Kick-Off Call

At the start of the project, our team initiated a kick-off call to establish a foundation for success. We extensively examined the client's brief and prepared perceptive questions for the Client to gain a complete understanding of their needs and goals. The questions were to determine:

  • The difference between Career Points and Badges

  • The Game Rules

Then, we devised a strategy, with specific time limits, to guarantee that we were making progress toward providing an exceptional redesign.

1.02 Meeting with Client

Following a review of the client's brief and consultation with my team, we opted to arrange a meeting with the client to address any uncertainties regarding the features of Prentus before proceeding. Specifically, we aimed to clarify the distinctions and guidelines surrounding the "Career Points" and "Badges" features, which were among the primary functionalities requested by the client.

After meeting with the client, we were able to establish regulations for incorporating gamification into the Prentus platform. Our decision was to award users with Career Points upon completion of job-seeking tasks such as uploading resumes, connecting with other users, and updating their portfolios. Users have the option to exchange these points for services such as career counseling and portfolio evaluations. Additionally, we decided to utilize badges to signify the users' progress on the website.

2. Ideation

2.01 User Stories

Upon receiving the client's input, our team analyzed the primary objectives that the client wanted their users to accomplish. We evaluated each objective and created 3 different User Flows.

As a user, I want to...

  • As a user, I want to be rewarded for meeting my goals multiple weeks in a row (Streaks feature).

  • As I user, I want to earn a badge every time I complete a milestone.

  • As a user, I want to be able to view all my streaks and badges.

2.02 User Flows

Creating User Flows enabled us to arrange the order of screens and establish a seamless navigation experience for completing important tasks. By presenting the user experience in an orderly and explicit manner, we ensured that the end product was user-friendly and easy to use.

2.03 Med-Fi Wireframes

After conducting research and collecting data, we created Low-Fidelity Wireframes.

Each team member designed Wireframes for various pages of the website. I worked on the "Completed Milestone" Modal. We then held a collaborative design session to share ideas and perspectives.

After several rounds of revision, we produced the final Low-Fidelity Wireframes, which we presented to the client.

3. Design

3.01 Hi-Fi Wireframes

Having completed the MidFi wireframes, my team and I were prepared to construct the HiFi wireframes. To ensure a smooth transition, each team member collaborated closely on their respective screens from the MidFi wireframes. I was responsible for the "Weekly Rewards" and part of the "Badges" screens.  After that, we went through all the iterations together and shared our ideas about how to improve each other's designs.

We also expanded our component library to facilitate the effortless adaptation of components from MidFi to HiFi.

3.02 Style Guide

Upon integration of the new functionalities, the team proceeded to revise and enhance the client's pre-existing style guide.

4. Developer Handoff

4.01 Developer Handoff

Once my team and I finished designing the Hi-Fi Wireframes for the Prentus website, we proceeded to craft a detailed client/developer handoff document to aid in future website development. I approached this task by imagining myself as a developer reviewing my annotations, in order to ensure that all information gaps were covered. I provided annotations for frequently used components such as fonts, buttons, and icons, and indicated that their specifications were consistent across all pages.

5. Reflexion

After redesigning the UX of the Prentus website, I reflected on how I was able to enhance the user experience.

Together with my team, we extensively researched successful gamified platforms and incorporated relevant elements into the job search process, such as completing tasks, applying for jobs, and receiving feedback. I believe this not only will make the job search process more enjoyable but also encourage users to return to the website.

I believe that Prentus has the potential to include additional gamification features in the future. One example would be interactive quizzes that focus on job search and career development, such as "What is the ideal job for you?" or "How to prepare for a job interview?" This feature can provide users with valuable information and help them acquire more knowledge about the job search process.

To sum up, introducing gamification to the job search website was an excellent opportunity to conduct an in-depth study of gamification principles, and it was a valuable experience overall.
